Regarding the flesh color of the Mephs.
I painted a basic grey all over the flesh, then built up the highlights by just adding white to that base. Once I was done there, I increased the shadow depth by just adding a darker shade of grey in a very thin wash. A couple of applications of that is necessary.
But, the last step, really doesn't even show up on the photo at all. I took a very thin (like 15 parts water to 1 part paint) bright purpleish color (the same color I used for the armor bits) and did a few layers of wash over the whole skin area.
What this seems to do is pull all the colors together and give a smoother overall look.
I did a very similiar thing with the gorts skin, but I washed it first with a green color, then with a bluish purple. I really like the effect, but it's very subtle and hard to see in photos.
I sure wish I could take bright, clear, crisp photos like you do!!
